What Cloudy Headlights Are Costing You After Dark

Headlight lenses are polycarbonate, not glass. They leave the factory with a thin protective coating, and years of sun, road grit and washing wear that coating off. What is underneath oxidizes. The lens goes from clear to faintly milky to properly yellow, and because it happens over years, most drivers never register how much light they have lost until they see a restored pair next to theirs.

The bulb is still doing its job. The lens is scattering the output before it reaches the road, which shortens how much warning you get of anything in front of you at speed.

A yellow or milky cast visible in daylight with the lights off
Beams that look dim or scattered rather than throwing a defined pattern
Fine cracking or a flaking film across the lens surface
One lens noticeably worse than the other, usually the passenger side
Oncoming drivers flashing you when your high beams are off
New bulbs that made no real difference to how far you can see
What we do

What Our Headlight Restoration in Raleigh Involves

Restoring a headlight is a resurfacing job, not a cleaning job. Nothing you wipe on the outside of an oxidized lens will fix it, because the damage is in the plastic itself: a layer of degraded, sun-damaged polycarbonate sitting on top of clear material. That degraded layer has to come off, the surface underneath has to be brought back to optical clarity, and then it has to be protected, because bare polycarbonate with no coating on it will begin oxidizing again from the first sunny week.

Most disappointing headlight results skip the third part. The lens looks excellent for a month and yellow again by the end of the season.

Removing the oxidation

We wet sand the lens in stages, working through progressively finer abrasives. Each stage removes the scratch pattern left by the one before it. Early stages take the yellowed material off entirely, which is why a lens looks worse partway through the process than it did at the start. Later stages refine the surface until the sanding marks are fine enough to be polished out. The number of stages depends on how far the oxidation has gone, which we can usually judge from a photo.

Bringing back clarity

The sanded lens is then machine polished until it is optically clear rather than merely lighter in color. This is where the light output comes back. A lens that is smooth to the touch can still scatter badly if the surface has not been refined enough, so this stage is judged by looking through the lens at the reflector behind it, not by looking at the lens.

Sealing the surface

Once the lens is clear, it is stripped of polishing residue and sealed. This is the stage that decides how long the result lasts. We work mobile throughout Raleigh and bring our own water and power, so nothing needs to be set up at your address, and you do not need to be home.

Some lenses are past restoring. Internal fogging behind the lens, deep cracking through the plastic, and moisture trapped inside a sealed housing are all problems that resurfacing the outside will not touch, because the damage is not on the outside. We would rather tell you that from a photo than take your money and hand back a lens that still looks wrong. When restoration will work, the difference is visible from across the driveway and measurable the first night you drive on it.

Why us

Why Raleigh Drivers Come to Us for Headlight Restoration

We seal the lens

The polishing is the part everyone sees. The sealing is the part that decides whether you are looking at clear headlights next summer or booking this again.

We tell you if it will not work

Send a photo first. Internal fogging and cracking through the plastic cannot be fixed from the outside, and we will say so before you book rather than after we arrive.

We are insured. Most here are not.

Machine work on a headlight happens inches from your paint and your trim. Ask anyone quoting you whether they carry business insurance and watch how the conversation goes.

Your driveway, our water and power

No hookups, no appointment at a shop, no waiting room. We need the vehicle and somewhere to work, and you do not need to be home for it.

You pay when you can see the difference

Photos come through as we work. Payment is collected after the job is finished and you have looked at the result.

Step by step

What to Expect During Your Headlight Restoration

1

Send a photo, get an answer

Text or upload a picture of your headlights. We can usually tell from that whether the haze is surface oxidation we can remove or damage inside the housing that we cannot.

2

We come to you

We arrive with our own water and power and mask off the paint and trim around each lens before anything abrasive touches the vehicle.

3

Sand, polish, seal

The oxidized layer is wet sanded off in stages, the lens is machine polished back to optical clarity, and the surface is sealed so it holds.

4

Look at it, then pay

We photograph the result and hand the vehicle back. Payment is collected once you have seen both headlights side by side with how they started.

How Much Does Headlight Restoration Cost in Raleigh, NC?

Headlight restoration is quoted per vehicle, and the number moves with how far the oxidation has gone rather than with the make of the car.

A lens with light hazing needs fewer sanding stages than one that has gone properly yellow and started to flake, and the difference is labor rather than materials. Lens size matters too. The large one-piece units on newer SUVs take longer than the compact lenses on an older sedan. How much surrounding trim has to be masked off first can change the time as well.

What a quote covers: masking, the full sanding sequence, machine polishing to clarity, and sealing the finished lens. Both headlights, not one. Send a photo before you book anything. We will tell you what your lenses need, what it costs, and whether restoration is the right answer for them at all.

Questions

Headlight Restoration FAQ

Yes, when the haze is on the outside of the lens, which is the case for most yellowed headlights. Oxidation happens in the surface layer of the polycarbonate, and removing that layer and polishing what is underneath restores both the appearance and the light output. What restoration cannot fix is damage inside the housing: internal fogging, moisture behind the lens, or cracking through the plastic. We check for that from a photo before booking.

That depends almost entirely on whether the lens is sealed afterward. Bare polycarbonate with the factory coating removed will start oxidizing again from the first stretch of sun, which is why some restorations look excellent for a month and yellow again by the end of the season. Parking out of direct sun and avoiding harsh cleaners on the lens both extend it.

It is quoted per vehicle, based on how far the oxidation has progressed and how large the lenses are. Light hazing takes fewer sanding stages than a lens that has yellowed and begun flaking, and that labor difference is what moves the price. Send a photo of your headlights and we will quote the actual job, including whether restoration is worth doing on them at all.

Look at them in daylight with the lights off. A clear lens looks like glass; an oxidized one has a yellow or milky cast you can see from a few feet away. At night the giveaway is a beam that looks scattered rather than throwing a defined pattern down the road. If you recently fitted new bulbs and noticed no real improvement, the lens is almost always the reason.

Headlights are one of the twelve items on the NCDOT annual safety inspection checklist, alongside brakes, tires, steering and wipers. Whether a specific hazed lens passes is at the inspector's discretion rather than a fixed threshold, so we will not tell you a restoration guarantees a pass. What we will say is that heavily oxidized lenses cut measurable light output, and that is what the check exists to catch.

Yes, and it is worth knowing before you spend anything. Moisture trapped inside a sealed housing, fogging on the inner face of the lens, and cracks running through the plastic are all problems on the wrong side of the surface we work on. Restoration will make the outside clear and the headlight will still look wrong. Send a photo and we will tell you which situation you are in.

No. We work mobile across Raleigh and bring our own water and power, so no hookups are needed at your address. We need access to the vehicle and somewhere to work. You get photos as we go and payment is collected after you have seen the finished result.

Yes. The same wet sanding, polishing and sealing process used in headlight restoration works on fog lights and oxidized tail light lenses. Tell us when you request a quote and we will include them in the price, since doing them in the same appointment costs less than booking a second visit later.
