What the Weekly Car Wash Is Doing to Your Paint
The dirt on a car is not soft. It is mineral grit, brake dust and road film, and any washing method that drags something across the panel drags that grit with it. Spinning brushes are the worst version, which is why cars that live on automatic washes develop the same scratching in the same pattern.
There is a second layer washing cannot reach at all. Brake dust, rail dust and sap bond to the clear coat rather than sitting on it, and no amount of soap lifts them. That is what makes a freshly washed panel still feel rough.
What Our Exterior Detailing in Raleigh Includes
The difference between a wash and an exterior detail is what happens after the dirt is gone. A wash removes what is loose. A detail removes what is loose, then removes what is bonded, then leaves something behind to slow down how fast it all comes back. Skipping the middle step is why a car can be washed every week and still feel rough to the hand.
We work at your address with our own water and power, which means the vehicle is washed where it sits rather than driven anywhere afterward to pick up road film on the way home.
The wash itself
Wheels and wheel wells are done first, because they are the dirtiest part of the vehicle and doing them last contaminates everything already cleaned. The paint is then washed by hand, top down, with the wash media kept out of the grit it has just removed. Panel gaps, badges, mirror housings and the areas around door handles hold dirt that a passing wash never touches.
Decontamination
This is the stage that separates the service from a wash. Bonded contamination, brake dust, rail dust, sap and road film, is chemically and mechanically pulled off the clear coat until the panel is smooth to the touch rather than merely clean. The test is a hand across the paint after drying: if it drags, contamination is still there. Decontamination is also what has to happen before any polishing or coating work, which is why it appears on those pages too.
Trim, glass and wheels
Exterior plastic and rubber trim is cleaned and treated. Faded gray trim next to clean paint is one of the most visible signs of an ageing vehicle and one of the most satisfying to reverse. Glass is cleaned outside, and wheels are finished properly rather than rinsed.
Protection
The vehicle is dried without dragging grit across it, and protection is applied to the paint so water sheets rather than sits and the next round of contamination has something to land on other than bare clear coat.
An exterior detail makes paint clean, smooth and protected. What it does not do is remove scratches. Swirl marks, wash marring and etching live in the clear coat, and taking them out is a polishing job rather than a washing one. If your paint has those, a detail will make it look considerably better and the swirls will still be there under a streetlight, and we would rather tell you that here than have you notice it afterward. You do not need to be home, photographs come through as we work, and payment is collected after you have seen the vehicle.

How Much Does Exterior Car Detailing Cost in Raleigh, NC?
Exterior detailing is quoted per vehicle, and three things move the price.
Size is the first and most predictable: a large SUV has considerably more panel, glass and wheel area than a sedan. The second is how much decontamination the paint needs, which depends on how long it has been since the last one rather than on how dirty the car looks today. Heavy bonded contamination is a slower job than surface dirt, and a car that has never been decontaminated takes longer than one that was done last year. The third is condition of the trim and wheels, since faded trim and baked-on brake dust both add time.
